Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
is a goal-oriented intervention specifically tailored to a particular person or condition as an integral part of the person's treatment or lesson plan. AAT is directed &/or delivered by a health or human service professional, within the scope of his/her professional practice, in association with an animal (and often a trained volunteer Pet Partner handler) that meets specific criteria. AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional &/or cognitive functioning. The process is documented and evaluated.

* NOTE: Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) ... Library R.E.A.D. programs would be considered AAA while School R.E.A.D. programs would be considered AAT. Even though teachers are not present during the 20 minute R.E.A.D. session as a Physical, Speech or Psycho Therapist would be they are very involved in setting individual student goals and tracking progress unlike a library program.
